Matt’s Story
As a child, I was fascinated by gadgets and gizmos. I’d try on my dad’s fancy watches, sunglasses, or lighters, constantly opening and closing the cases and latches to see how the mechanisms worked. No R/C car was safe; after pumping the R/C car full of lead with my pellet gun, I would then harvest the motors, wires, and lights, experimenting with different simple electrical circuits.
In elementary school, I had a solar-powered calculator for a short time. This calculator was the size of a credit card, and I’d covertly use the digital calculator on my math exams (back in the 80s, solar power seemed pretty high-tech). The calculator was the kind of magic where, every time you pull the calculator out of the case, you take a moment to look at the calculator and think, “Damn, I love this!”
The same kind of passion drove the Hotti leash project. Every detail of the Hotti heated dog leash has been scrutinized and reworked, from the font and the logo to each feature our team explored. I pushed my engineers hard to maximize value while minimizing physical size and total weight.
After several failed rounds exploring design options for the leash, I could tell my industrial design artist was getting frustrated with me. Eventually, I had to use modeling clay to show the design artist exactly what I envisioned. The result is something truly unique.
